From Holy to Haunted: Understanding the Many Types of Meditation
Where Haunted Mindfulness Fits
Suppose you’ve ever gone looking for meditation online. In that case, you’ve probably noticed there are about a thousand flavors 👻religious, spiritual, new age, scientific, secular, philosophical, creative, ritual-based… and then the mysterious “other” category where people like me live.
So let’s demystify it.
Because meditation isn’t a one-size-fits-all practice✨ it’s a spectrum of human ways to come home to yourself.
🌿 1. Religious Meditation: The Roots
This is where meditation began🕯️ sacred, devoted, and tied to spiritual tradition.
Religious meditations are often about connection to a higher power or surrendering to something greater. Think:
-
Christian contemplative prayer
-
Sufi dhikr
-
Buddhist jhana or metta (loving-kindness) practices
They’re beautiful, structured, and devotional🕯️ but not everyone resonates with religious frameworks or language.
💫 2. Spiritual & Mystical Meditation: The Expansion
Next came the seekers💫 people craving connection without dogma.
These practices still honor the unseen, but they speak in symbols instead of scriptures.
Here you’ll find:
-
chakra balancing
-
energy cleansing
-
soul journey visualizations
-
intuitive connection to the universe or your “higher self”
It’s the realm of crystals, intuition, and personal magi💫less church, more cosmos.
🔮 3. New Age & Metaphysical Meditation: The Manifestors
This is where spirituality meets modern imagination.
New Age meditation borrows from many traditions and adds a twist of creative manifestation🔮 affirmations, sound baths, frequency work, and guided visualizations for abundance or healing.
It’s the gateway many modern practitioners enter through🔮, a beautiful blend of belief and personal power.
📜 4. Philosophical & Stoic Mindfulness: The Thinkers
Not all meditation is about transcendence📜 some is about perspective.
Stoic and philosophical mindfulness come from thinkers who approached peace through rational reflection and emotional regulation.
These are the meditations that turn wisdom into grounding:
-
journaling for clarity
-
observing emotion before reaction
-
questioning thoughts rather than believing them
It’s mindfulness for the overthinkers, skeptics, and philosophers📜the ones who calm the chaos through logic.
🧠 5. Scientific & Secular Mindfulness: The Evidence-Based Revolution
This is where the modern mindfulness movement lives.
In the 1970s, scientists like Jon Kabat-Zinn wanted to test the effects of meditation without the religious context.
Thus, secular mindfulness was born:
A non-religious, research-backed approach to awareness that helps the nervous system regulate, heal, and refocus.
It’s grounded in neuroscience and psycholog🧠the foundation for many therapy models today (MBSR, DBT, ACT, etc.).
This is where I started my training🧠 learning how the mind-body connection can rewire trauma, stress, and attention patterns through consistent practice.
👻6. Creative & Ritual Mindfulness: The Bridge Between Science & Soul
And this… is where I live.
My meditations blend secular mindfulness with creative ritual, metaphor, and sensory practice👻 think of it as spooky science for the sensitive soul.
I teach Haunted Mindfulness, a form of secular meditation that uses symbolism, storytelling, and sensory grounding (often with tea rituals, breath, or gentle visualization).
Where traditional mindfulness says, “observe your thoughts,”
I say, “brew your stillness like tea🔮slow, intentional, and full of warmth.”
Where science says, “calm the nervous system,”
I say, “cast a Stillness Spell.”
Because regulation doesn’t have to feel clinical✨ it can feel enchanted.
🕯️ 7. Magical & Esoteric Meditation: The Alchemists
Finally, we reach the end of the spectrum🕯️ where meditation becomes spellwork.
Here, mindfulness and magic merge.
Practitioners meditate to raise energy, connect with ancestors, or transform emotion into intention.
For some, it’s spiritual.
For others, it’s creative play.
For me, it’s a reminder that mindfulness itself is a form of magic🕯️ the kind that changes you from the inside out.
🌙 Where My Meditations Fit
My guided meditations, both on YouTube and inside the Mindful Misfit Library, are crafted for the haunted and healing:
-
Secular at the core: backed by neuroscience and accessible to all belief systems.
-
Ritual in rhythm: inviting sensory connection through sound, story, and tea.
-
Trauma-sensitive: no forced silence, no perfectionism👌 just presence, compassion, and curiosity.
Whether you’re listening to Harbor in the Haunted Room, Mindfulness for Rage, or my Monster Mindfulness meditations, every one is a bridge between logic and lore👻 a reminder that your nervous system and your magic are not at odds.
