Taming the Rage Loop: When Your Brain Won't Stop Picking Fights
Breaking the Rage Loop: Mindfulness Rituals for Neurodivergent Anger & Overstimulation
Have you ever felt like your brain is on a scavenger hunt for reasons to be mad?
One irritation sparks, and suddenly your mind is leaping from thought to thought like a rage monster on a sugar high.
You try to reason with it, dismiss it, ignore it...but the monster keeps looking for fuel:
- "They didn't text back fast enough." Chomp.
- "Why did they breathe so loud?" Chomp.
- "Everything is unfair." Double chomp.
Welcome to the rage loop!
What's Actually Happening Here? 🧠
Science has fancy names for this:
- Anger rumination – when the brain replays anger triggers on loop
- Emotional cascades – when big feelings feed repetitive thinking, and the cycle spins faster
- Hostile-attribution bias – the brain interprets neutral things as threats
For ADHD, autistic, and traumatized brains ✨already running hot on overstimulation and emotional intensity✨ the rage loop is a frequent uninvited guest.
The Rage Monster Metaphor
Think of rage as a monster inside your haunted house. It doesn't just stomp around 👻 it leaps from thought to thought, grabbing onto anything it can.
It doesn't care if the story is true.
It only cares if it can burn.
It only cares if it can burn.
The good news? Monsters can be managed.
The RAGE Loop Breaker
Here's a simple four-step ritual (science-approved, witch-tested) to help you break free when the monster gets loose:
R – Recognize
- Name 3 body sensations (jaw tight, chest hot, fists buzzing)
- Name 1 emotion word
A – Anchor
- Breathe: 4 in, 6 out × 6 rounds
- Shift one sensory input (light, clothing, touch)
G – Ground & Gap
- Use 5–4–3–2–1 grounding (see, feel, hear, smell, taste)
- Ask: "What else could this mean?"
E – Expel
- Shake, stretch, stomp, hum, sigh
- Take one regulating action (sip water, step outside)
🧟 Why This Works
- Breathing + sensory shifts calm the nervous system
- Naming emotions tames the amygdala
- Grounding interrupts rumination
- Movement discharges stored energy
This isn't about killing rage. Rage has a purpose. But it doesn't need to wreck your whole haunted house every time it visits.
A Ritual in a Cup
Pair your RAGE Loop Breaker with a tea ritual:
- Cooling herbs (peppermint, chamomile) when the fire is too hot
- Grounding roots (ginger, licorice, dandelion) when you need to anchor
- Or simply the act of steeping 🫖 the ritual of water, heat, and time ✨ reminds you that you control the cup, not the rage
🕯️ Final Word
If you've ever felt consumed by irritability, overstimulation, or looping fury 💫 you're not alone. The rage loop is real.
But you have tools. You have rituals.
And you have the power to remind your monster who owns the haunted house.
And you have the power to remind your monster who owns the haunted house.
"I am not my rage. I am the keeper of my house. The monster may visit, but it does not rule."
